1. Overview

Calibrate ("we," "our," or "us") provides AI-assisted grading software for K–12 teachers. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you use Calibrate at calibr8ed.com.

We take privacy seriously — especially because Calibrate handles student education records. We are committed to full compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and applicable state privacy laws.

The short version: We use your Google Classroom data to help you grade student writing. Student names and personal information are never sent to any AI system. You own your data and can delete it at any time.

Account information

When you sign in with Google, we receive:

With your permission, we access your Google Classroom account to import:

Usage data

We collect information about how you use Calibrate, including:

Information we do NOT collect

3. Google Classroom and Drive data

Calibrate uses the following Google API scopes:

Scope Why we need it
classroom.courses.readonly To list your active Google Classroom courses
classroom.rosters.readonly To import your student roster for each class
classroom.coursework.students To read student assignment submissions for grading
classroom.coursework.me To read assignment details from your perspective as teacher
drive.file To export graded feedback PDFs to your Google Drive
drive.readonly To read student-submitted assignment files (Word documents, PDFs) from Google Drive. When students submit file attachments through Google Classroom, Calibrate reads those files to extract the text for AI-assisted grading. Without this scope, file attachment submissions cannot be graded automatically.
userinfo.email / profile To identify your account and display your name

Calibrate's use of Google user data is limited to the purposes described above. We do not use Google data to serve advertising and do not sell or transfer Google user data to third parties except as necessary to provide the Calibrate service, as required by law, or with your explicit consent. This complies with Google's API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Specifically regarding drive.readonly access: Calibrate uses this scope solely to read the content of student assignment submission files for the purpose of AI-assisted grading. We do not read, index, store, or process any other files in a user's Google Drive. File content is used only to generate grades and feedback and is not retained beyond what is necessary to provide the grading service.

4. How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

We do not use your data or student data for advertising, and we do not sell data to third parties.

5. AI processing and student data

Calibrate uses the Anthropic Claude API to analyze and grade student writing. We take significant measures to protect student privacy in this process:

PII redaction before AI processing

Before any student submission is sent to the AI, Calibrate automatically removes:

The AI only ever sees anonymized submission content. It is never able to identify which student wrote a particular submission.

What the AI receives

The AI processes:

Anthropic's data handling

We use Anthropic as a data processor. Anthropic processes data in accordance with their Privacy Policy and our data processing agreement. Anthropic does not use data submitted through the API to train their models.

6. FERPA compliance

Calibrate is designed to comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). We operate as a "school official" under FERPA when processing student education records on behalf of educational institutions.

Our FERPA commitments
